Museum of Flying

Santa Monica Airport, Santa Monica, CA
Southern California has been at the nexus of aviation history and Santa Monica has played an integral role in that development. The first circum navigation of the world by aircraft originated from here in planes designed and built by Douglas Aircraft, the Douglas World Cruiser, and arguably, the most notable plane in modern aviation, the DC-3, was manufactured here by the thousands, launching air travel as we know it today. Entering from Bundy via Airport Ave. is like taking a step back in time. It is for that reason that the Museum of Flying fits comfortably into the context of the south side, with a focus on celebrating the contributions of the aircraft, their designers and builders and the heroes who flew them. Here, a simple structure, made of steel and reminiscent of that era has been erected on a narrow tree lined street as a tribute to the people who labored over them, and the planes they produced, providing places to learn , a refuge for creative arts and open space for families to play.
